Abstract

A Journalist of Old Time Blaj: Iuliu Maior and „Unirea poporului” (1919-1945)

Professor Iuliu Maior, born in Reghin in 1886 into a family with a long-standing Greek-Catholic tradition, spent most of his life in Blaj as a teacher and journalist. This study focuses only a segment of his journalistic activity, specifically that related to “Unirea poporului”, the publication he founded in 1919 alongside his friend Alexandru Lupeanu-Melin. Maior maintained a close connection with the publication throughout his life, initially as an editor and later as director, until his death. The issues of this publication feature numerous articles bearing his signature, covering topics such as news from the life of the Catholic Church, portraits of ecclesiastical figures, sermons, moral and religious teachings, reviews, and more. My analysis focused on the main themes addressed by the author, the role of this publication in educating its readers, the challenges Maior faced as a journalist, and his position within the broader context of the journalism of his time.

Keywords: Iuliu Maior; interwar press; educating readers; the role of reading; the message on morality and identity.
