Abstract

From the Land of Bârsa and Cruceburg, through Cumania, towards Moldavia

During the 13th century and the early 14th century, the Kingdom of Hungary and the Catholic Church expanded their influence across the Carpathian Mountains, historians placing the core of the Bishopric of Cumania inside Moldavia. The process of the founding of Moldavia has been heavily debated in historiography and was often linked with the consolidation of claimed Romanian petty states from Moldavia, some dating back as far as the XIII century, during the existence of the Bishopric.

The present study addresses the existence of Romanian polities relevant in the process of Moldavia’s founding, during the period between 1211 and 1331, focusing on the events pertaining to the presence of the Teutonic Order in Burzenland and the history of the Bishopric of Cumania. Also, addressing the importance of said events for Moldovia, the location of Cruceburg, various borders and the seat of the Bishopric.
